the city of paris recently granted honorary citizenship to ilya yashin, recognizing his bravery and dedication to human rights. yashin, a former political prisoner in russia, has been a vocal advocate for freedom and democracy despite significant personal risk. he was liberated in the summer of 2024 with a prisoners exchange from russian prisons. the ceremony at the hôtel de ville in paris brought together supporters and officials to honor his contributions and show solidarity with those who continue to fight for justice worldwide.

as part of the event, pianist and composer nikolai augustin performed a 20-minute concert. he also presented a piece of music composed specifically for the occasion, reflecting the courage and hope that yashin’s story inspires.
